Replacement to the Rum

"Look What I Found In My Beer"
The Beautiful South
1998

For some, alcohol is an escape. For others, it's something to be escaped from. That goes for rock stars just like it does for everyone else.

The Beautiful South was formed in the late 1980s by, among others, two members and one roadie from The Housemartins. Between 1998 and 2006, they released ten albums featuring a unique sound, with multiple singers, duets, and vocal harmonies telling songwriter Paul Heaton's unique stories.

One of the more personal stories Heaton told was about his own alcoholism. "Look What I Found In My Beer" contrasts the singer's addiction with what he sees as saving him from it, his music:

Look what I found in my beer,
A start to being lonely and an end to my career....
Look what I found in the drum,
A lifelong beat and replacement to the rum
